Rachel Forbes

A Landscape and Garden Designer based in the Wharfe Valley, West Yorkshire

I have always enjoyed gardening and being outdoors and in 2006 I set up a garden maintenance business with a friend.  Over the last ten years the business has evolved and I now work as a gardener and designer offering garden design, planting consultancy and maintenance.  I love working outside, observing the changing seasons and cycles, and am happiest when I’m digging and planting, and watching new gardens come to life.

I am passionate about plants and I’m constantly discovering new plants and new ways to combine them.  Every design project is a rich learning experience and over the years I have built an extensive knowledge of plants and where to source them, from local nurseries to specialist online suppliers.

I regularly visit open gardens and larger scale landscape projects in search of inspiration and ideas.

I believe that gardens should be inspiring and uplifting places to be, as well as productive, functional and fun.  I endeavour to design in a holistic way, incorporating sustainable practice, encouraging biodiversity and wildlife, and using a sensitive palette of materials appropriate to the site and its surroundings.  I am inspired by the naturalistic planting movement, and the wider landscape both natural and man-made.
